Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen is an Assistant Professor of European law, particularly environmental law, at Maastricht University.
Her research deals with topics of water and marine environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and restoration, climate adaptation and corporate sustainability due diligence. The leading theme in her research is understanding what kind of regulatory solutions are needed for enacting systemic changes to halt widescale environmental crises such as biodiversity loss and pollution, and to achieve effective protection of the natural environment. She defended her doctoral dissertation titled ‘Normative Environmental Quality as a Regulatory Strategy in EU Environmental law: Legal Implications of Water Status Objectives’ in June 2024 at the University of Eastern Finland.
Prior to her academic career, Suvi-Tuuli worked as a legal advisor within national government and EU institution, and she has continued providing external expertise to authorities on both levels especially on water and marine environmental law questions.
