Podcast #9: Pricing Pollution: the use of carbon markets in EU climate policy
Carbon pricing has been at the heart of EU climate and energy policy since the very beginning with the development of the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS). As part of the European Green Deal, the EU has expanded the EU ETS to include new sectors and has set up a scheme to price carbon at an international level. How do these instruments work and what are their social implications?
To help us answer these questions, we are joined by Peter Vis, a renowned expert with many years of experience on the matter.
About the guest

Peter Vis is a Senior Research Associate at the European University Institute (School of Transnational Governance) in Florence, encompassing research and assisting in teaching (a Master’s course in Transnational Governance and Executive Training). He is also a Senior Adviser at Rud Pedersen Public Affairs in Brussels and does other consultancy work on an independent basis.
He worked 30 years for the European Commission in a variety of roles, but mainly on climate-change related topics, including EU climate policies, renewable energy, and the decarbonisation of transport.
