Researcher in environmental governance

Dr. Jonas Schoenefeld has been a researcher at the IWU since October 2020. He was previously employed at the Institute of Political Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Dr. Schoenefeld received his doctorate from the School of Environmental Sciences/Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia. He also holds a BA in psychology with minors in environmental studies and Spanish from Middlebury College (USA) and an MPhil in Geography and Environment from the University of Oxford (United Kingdom). Among his research foci are climate, energy and environmental governance (including climate change adaptation and governance at the neighbourhood level), as well as policy monitoring and evaluation at different governance levels.

Dr. Schoenefeld is currently researching how govern building modernization in the Hessian municipalities, and how different policy instruments work in that context. His earlier work includes studying municipal climate change adaptation and how nation states and international institutions assess and monitor their climate policies, as well as the characteristics of renewable energy legislation at the EU level.

Dr. Schoenefeld has published widely in journals including Nature Climate Change, Environmental Politics, West European Politics, WIREs Climate Change, Regional Environmental Change and others. His publications are available here.
