In his welcome remarks at the first GreenDeal-NET conference on June 27th in Lisbon, Sebastian Oberthür (Scientific coordinator of GreenDeal-NET) highlights the importance of European and international governance in tackling the climate and sustainability challenge. With 12 project partners at its core, GreenDeal-NET provides a platform to address the intricate challenges in governance, policy, and law pertaining to the sustainability and climate transition. Through a range of activities including events, roundtables, debates, policy briefs, podcasts, etc. the network fosters a multi-sectoral approach to decision-making and promotes public engagement.
To tackle the complex challenges of sustainability, the network embraces dynamism and complexity in designing effective governance solutions. The transition to sustainability requires a comprehensive, whole-of-society effort, involving contentious decisions on cost distribution, investments, and resource allocation. Equity issues must be addressed while considering the limits of material growth and sufficiency. The climate and sustainability transition necessitates radical change, including in societal and institutional systems.
GreenDeal-NET's focus extends beyond policy and law to encompass sociology and economics, recognizing the interconnectedness of environmental and societal challenges. Governance plays a pivotal role in shaping transformative decision-making and societal organization. By fostering dialogue among experts, policymakers, and the interested public, the network informs the development of sustainable solutions.
To contribute to the network's efforts, universities and other qualified organisations can become associate members and individuals can join as experts. Joining GreenDeal-NET opens doors to engaging with fellow experts, policymakers, societal stakeholders and the media, providing opportunities for academic exchange and increased visibility. Reach out via email, the GreenDeal-NET website, or social media channels to get involved!
