Research Fellow on Environmental Justice

Carla Gomes is currently a research fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa). Her research has focused mostly on adaptation to climate change and environmental justice. She currently leads Work Package 5 - Society, Governance, Policy - at the H2020 Project B-WaterSmart (2020-2024), which focuses on sustainable water management across six European cities and regions. The project will support the implementation of a circular economy for water, as well as addressing the challenges related to climate change and water scarcity.
Carla has started her career as a journalist, but decided to move into academia after earning her Master in Environmental Management and Policies (University of Aveiro, Portugal). The final dissertation - on Clean Development in the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries – was published as an awarded book. She was awarded her PhD by the University of East Anglia (UK), in co-tutelle with the University of Lisbon. The thesis focused on land justice in Mozambique, from the perspective of environmental justice.
Member of the research group SHIFT – Environment, Territory and Society at ICS-ULisboa, Carla has been involved in multiple interdisciplinary projects around sustainability, with a special focus on supporting climate adaptation at the regional and local levels.
